About Domains

What is a Domain Name

A domain name is your address and identity on the Internet. It's where people can find your website on the Internet
or use to send you Emails.

  • Businesses typically register domain names with their company name and sometimes also register their product names (beware Trade Marks).
  • Individuals often register family names or names that have a personal interest to them
Domain names have two parts: the name and the extension and it is separated by a 'dot'.

In Daily.co.uk, the Daily is the name and the .co.uk is a United Kingdom specific Top-Level Domain (TLD) extension. Once put together in your web browser, the whole address is referred to as the URL (Uniform Resource Locator).

For example: http://www.daily.co.uk/

There are several domain name extensions to choose from. Every country in the world will have its own specific extension. Each country will also have its own set of requirements prescribing who can apply for a domain name under their country extension and the procedure for such application. The authority who runs these country specific extensions is known as the Naming Authority or Internet Registry.

Although most are non-profit organizations, all charge fees for registering a domain name. These fees vary from one country to another. Moreover, the majority of extensions do require that you are either a resident of that particular country or that your company is domiciled there in order to register.

As a result, there are only some 15 extensions that have no specific requirements or proof required in order to register a domain under a particular extension. Daily.co.uk can register all of these for you and offer an extensive range of hosting options for you to use with the domain.

Some popular domain name extensions are .com, .net and .org. Profit making companies tend to register .com and .net, while .org is often used to denote a non-profit organization.

In the UK, one can register .co.uk, org.uk, plc.uk, net.uk, ltd.uk or me.uk. The most popular variant is the .co.uk which presents some 90% of all .uk registrations. Others like .plc.uk, net.uk, ltd.uk and .sch.uk have prescribed requirements. You can check on all .uk requirements at Nominet's website, the UK domain registrar.

How to Choose a Good Domain Name

Before you rush out to buy a domain name you should consider some of the following points:

Generic name or a brand name?
If you look around on the Internet today you will find a large number of websites using words like "loans", "cars" and several generic words that are used as part of their domain name. These are good domain names as it indicates the types of product or theme of any given website. For example, one is not likely to register a domain name "cars.com" (which is not available !) to be used fora travel company. So a good tip if you are looking to register a domain but looking for a generic word, keep it close to what the general theme of your website is going to be about!

However, in today’s world, most of the generic domain names, the good ones that is, have been registered. So your best bet is to register your brand name or an abbreviation perhaps.

Length of a Domain Name

A domain name can be any length from 3 up to 67 characters and can include numbers or hyphens ( - ). Though you should bear in mind that the longer the domain name the more difficult it is to remember. Also if you are looking use it on your stationary or adverts, it may be difficult to accommodate them. Imagine having a domain name like this: imaginehavingadomainnamelikethis.com

Therefore the shorter the domain name the better!

Hyphenated Domains

If it is useful to ensure legibility put a hyphen in the middle of your domain to break up a long sentence. For example: book-shop.com. Though it is probably best not to put a hyphen in a domain name if possible and it should be used at the last resort.

Domain Registration

Your domain name is the key to your presence on the Internet. You can use your newly registered domain name (even an existing domain name you may have registered elsewhere!) for both Email and Web Hosting.
