What is a Domain Name

A domain name is your address and identity on the Internet. It's where people can find your website on the Internet

Domain names have two parts: the name and the extension and it is separated by a 'dot'.

How to Choose a Good Domain Name

Before you rush out to buy a domain name you should consider some of the following points:

Generic name or a brand name?
If you look around on the Internet today you will find a large number of websites using words like "loans", "cars" and several generic words that are used as part of their domain name. These are good domain names as it indicates the types of product or theme of any given website. For example, one is not likely to register a domain name "cars.com" (which is not available !) to be used fora travel company. So a good tip if you are looking to register a domain but looking for a generic word, keep it close to what the general theme of your website is going to be about!

However, in today’s world, most of the generic domain names, the good ones that is, have been registered. So your best bet is to register your brand name or an abbreviation perhaps.

Length of a Domain Name

A domain name can be any length from 3 up to 67 characters and can include numbers or hyphens ( - ). Though you should bear in mind that the longer the domain name the more difficult it is to remember. Therefore the shorter the domain name the better!

Hyphenated Domains

If it is useful to ensure legibility put a hyphen in the middle of your domain to break up a long sentence. For example: book-shop.com. Though it is probably best not to put a hyphen in a domain name if possible and it should be used at the last resort.
